As we conclude another enriching eight-week course focused on style and tone, it is pertinent to reflect on the learning experiences and the impact of innovative tools such as artificial intelligence (AI) on our educational journey.

Throughout this course, AI has played a crucial role, acting not only as a technological aid but also as an integral part of our learning process. The adoption of AI tools provided me with a secondary resource—akin to a knowledgeable assistant—that facilitated quick inquiries and ensured adherence to proper writing conventions. Despite prevalent ethical concerns surrounding the use of AI in academia, I likened the tool to an accessible encyclopedia, similar to Wikipedia, which I utilized frequently for revising drafts and enhancing my submissions.

The expected integration of AI in our coursework offered a unique opportunity to interact with this technology without apprehension. Regardless of the numerous prompts and suggestions generated by AI, I maintained a rigorous approach by critically evaluating and editing the content to ensure that my final submissions authentically represented my understanding and voice.

During the course, two particular study materials profoundly influenced my approach to professional communication and will undoubtedly impact my future career trajectory.

1. Plain Language:

Coming from an academic background that often prized complex and elevated language suitable for scholarly discourse, this course was a revelation. It underscored the importance of plain language in everyday communication. Plain language facilitates clearer understanding and removes the barriers often posed by unnecessarily complex diction. This realization was pivotal, as it reminded me of the universal need for clarity and accessibility in communication, regardless of the audience’s expertise.
